Colorado Association of REALTORS® Honors 2018 Legislator of the Year Mike Weissman
Representative Mike Weissman was awarded the 2018 Legislator of the Year Award by the Colorado Association of REALTORS® (CAR) for his notable legislative efforts in support of the American dream of homeownership. This is the second year the Colorado Association of REALTORS® has recognized Colorado legislators for their commitment to homeownership and REALTOR® priority issues.
In the 2018 legislative session, Rep. Weissman worked tirelessly to ensure common sense policy solutions like SB18-015 passed through both House and Senate chambers by unanimous decision. SB18-015 prevents the unauthorized occupation of property statewide by creating an emergency civil court process that a property may pursue when a squatter illegally takes up residence in their home. Prior to the passage of this bill, in many cases, families returned home from a vacation to find unauthorized occupants living in their home and as a result, had to spend time and money on lengthy eviction proceedings to remove squatters from their home. SB18-015 was signed into law by Governor Hickenlooper on June 6, 2018.
A resident of Aurora and Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives, Rep. Weissman was elected in 2016 to represent House District 36, which includes eastern Aurora and some unincorporated areas of Arapahoe County. As a member of the Colorado General Assembly, Rep. Weissman serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee.
“Our legislative policy committee, comprised of members throughout the state of Colorado, has carefully considered this decision and believes that a legislator who is dedicated to protecting property rights is a champion for the REALTOR® community,” said CAR Chair Ann Hayes. “Colorado REALTORS® work diligently to pursue public policy that builds better communities and we extend our sincerest gratitude to Rep. Weissman for his devotion to Colorado and support for REALTOR® priority issues.”
“The protection of property rights is recognized as an important link to general prosperity and a cultivator of future economic growth. REALTORS® guide Coloradans through one of the most significant purchases of their lives – their homes,” added Hayes. “Colorado REALTORS® work diligently to pursue public policy that builds better communities, preserves our environment, improves real estate practices and ensures economic vitality. As a Colorado Association of REALTORS® Legislator of the Year, we salute Rep. Weissman’s legislative efforts to support the American dream of homeownership.”
